Men’s Soccer
Record: 3-2 overall, 0-1 conference
Athlete of the Month: Junior Patrick Martin from West Berlin, Vermont. Martin leads the team thus far with three goals – including two in a 3-2 victory over Maine Maritime Academy on September 6 – and 10 shots on goal.
Overview: The Beavers opened the season with three straight victories, holding opponents to a meager goal a game. During their three game win streak, the Beaver men were firing on all cylinders, averaging 13 shots on goal and 2.3 goals scored. The potent offense was assisted by an almost impenetrable defense that only allowed three goals in three games while holding opposing teams to four shots on goal a game. The men suffered a recent setback losing their past two games to Endicott College on September 15 and Maine Maritime Academy September 19. The 4-1 loss to Endicott ended the Beaver three game win streak in a game where the Farmington offense was near nonexistent, mustering up a meager two shots on goal while Nile Rosie supplied the lone UMF goal. Paul Dupree, the Beaver goalkeeper, had three saves. In their rematch against MMA, the Farmington men were able to outshoot the Mariners 28-17 but were still only able to muster one goal. Freshman Michael Kelly provided the Beaver goal in the 4-1 losing effort while Dupree led the team with four saves in goal.

Women’s Soccer
Record: 2-3 overall, 0-1 conference
Overview:The Beaver women started the season rolling, winning their first two games against Maine Maritime Academy and UMaine Machias. In those two games, McKell Barnes and Crystal Johnson helped the women record shutouts by final scores of 1-0 and 4-0. The defense was clicking only allowing eight shots on goal in those two games while the offense was led by the prolific Laura St. John with two goals. After the stellar start, the women dropped their past three games. A stingy Beaver defense has limited teams to six goals in those three games but the offense has mustered only one. In a 2-0 loss to the University of Southern Maine on September 15, the Beaver women were only able to accumulate three shots on goal, limiting USM to four. But USM was able to capitalize, netting two scores on Farmington keeper Barnes. Farmington looked to bounce back against Maine Maritime on September 19, but the offense once again sputtered in the 2-1 loss, outshot by the Mariners 18-11. The Beavers were unable to take advantage of 15 MMA fouls while Melissa St. Amand was the lone scorer. Barnes led the team with five saves.

Women’s Cross Country
Athlete of the Month: Senior Captain Emily Farley. This will be Farley’s third year captaining the Beaver women. The long time runner from Mount Desert Island will be assisted by first year captains Liela Banks and Ashley Mace. Farley, in her first two years as captain, was able to lead the Beavers to back to back NAC championship victories. Overview: The women opened the season at Colby in the three-team Colby Relays. In the senior/junior circuit, Mace was the first Beaver to cross the finish line with a time of 22:34. Mace’s time was good enough for 18th overall and helped the Beavers finish third in the event. St. Pierre was the frontrunner in the sophomore/freshman race, finishing 14th with a time of 20:51. Farmington also finished third in the underclassmen event. Traveling to UMass-Dartmouth the next weekend, the Beaver women had five runners finish the race within 21 seconds of each other. St. Pierre was the first to cross with the time of 20:43, followed by Farley (20:49, 128th), and freshmen Salena Sykes (20:59, 137th), Caitlin Miller (21:00, 139th), and Molly Carl (21:04, 142nd). The hard running by the Beaver women was good enough for a score of 654 points placing them 21st overall.

Men’s Cross Country

Athlete of the Week: Freshman runner Ansel Mallonee. Mallonee was honored as the NAC Rookie of the Week last week, after placing 22nd in the Colby Class Wave Relay Carnival freshman/sophomore race with a time of 17:54.
Overview: The Farmington men opened the 2009 season by competing in the Colby Class Wave Relay Carnival on September 12. Junior Patrick Pozzetti paced the Beaver men in the upperclassmen race with a final time of 17:35 placing him 13th overall, followed by Cam Fecteau of Gorham, Maine (18:15, 17th). In the sophomore/freshman competition, Sophomore Cameron Betts led the Beavers with a final time of 17:27. Betts’ time was good enough for 15th place overall and helped pace Farmington to a third place finish. The men traveled the following week to UMass-Dartmouth to compete in the Shriner’s Invitational. The Beavers competed in the sub-varsity event finishing tenth overall with a final score of 292. Betts (28:03, 55th) paced Farmington, followed by Pozzetti (28:22, 63rd) and Fecteau (29:03, 90th).

Field Hockey
Record: 2-2 overall, 0-0 conference
Athlete of the Week: Junior Midfielder Emma Deans. In the Beavers recent game against Thomas College, Deans recorded her first point of the season, the difference for Farmington in a 2-1 overtime victory. The victory evened the Beavers record at 2-2.
Overview: Farmington opened the season with a 2-1 loss at Endicott College. Alyssa St. Pierre, Farmington’s points leader with seven, recorded an assist with a crisp pass to Lilly Barry who sent the ball flying into the back of the net for the Beaver’s lone goal of the day. Sarah Brown was pegged with the loss in goal as she stopped three shots in split time with Felisha Taylor. Farmington responded well to the loss, firing on all cylinders as they downed Gordon College at home by a score of 4-1. St. Pierre recorded three points on the day, netting two goals and assisting on another play. Junior Hattie Agnew and Senior Ashley Wentworth also recorded goals to round out the Beaver scoring. The Beavers dominated on both sides of the ball, outshooting Gordon 14-8. Taylor, a freshman from Chelsea, Maine, recorded her first career victory after stopping five shots. Trying to continue their winning ways, the ladies traveled to the University of Southern Maine to do non-conference battle with the Huskies. Neither side allowed a goal until the 42nd minute when USM took a 1-0 lead. The Huskies blasted in another goal in the 50th minute to open a 2-0 lead. The Beavers responded quickly, as Barry netted her second goal of the season off an assist from Pierre in the 51st minute. But the Beaver comeback was too little too late as USM controlled the rest of the game. Despite saving eight shots with a solid performance in goal, Taylor took her first loss of the season. In their latest game played on September 22, the Beavers needed overtime to record the victory. Traveling to Thomas College, Farmington found the score all knotted up after regulation, setting the stage for Deans’ late game heroics.

Women’s Volleyball
Record: 4-4 overall, 2-0 conference
Athlete of the Week: Senior Captain Jenna Rowan. Rowan has led the Beavers to their best start since 2006 with an even record of 4-4. The tough play of Rowan has helped the Beavers jump all over opponents in the past four matches, as Farmington has only been defeated in two out of their past 14 games. Rowan also leads the team in kills with 60 and is averaging 2.2 per game.
Overview: The Beaver women started the season losers of four in a row, with three of those first four losses coming at the hands of private school teams (Husson, Bates, Colby). Farmington has recently got back to their winning ways as Rowan, with the help of senior Caitlin Flaherty and sophomore Shannon Mitchell, have led the team to four straight victories. The first of the four victories came against the University of Southern Maine. The Beavers traveled to Portland on September 15 and dominated the Huskies taking three of four games en route to a victory. The next victory for the Beavers was also their first home win of the season as they defeated Unity College three games to one. The Beaver women then traveled to Thomas College for two critical NAC conference matches. In the first, Farmington dominated Johnson State, limiting the Badgers to an average of seven points a game. Mitchell led the Beaver attack with 12 kills while Whitney Walls tallied eight of Farmington’s 23 aces. The second match of the day pitted the high-flying Beavers against the Hornets of Lyndon State. The Beaver defense once again rose to the occasion, holding the Hornets to scores of 19, 12 and 12. In the three game sweep, Rowan led the team in kills with eight while Mitchell added four kills and five service aces.

Golf
Athlete of the Week: Rich Matthews, a junior from Portland, Maine. Matthews shot an 80 at the Farmington Invitational, pacing the Beavers to a third place finish. A week prior to the Farmington Invitational, Matthews led the Beavers to a second place finish at the Colby Classic Waterville Country Club. Matthews led Farmington with a 72 as the team finished a mere 10 shots behind Colby.
Overview: The golf team started off the year on the right foot, competing in six different events in the first two weeks of the season. The Beavers showed depth, with Nick Waltz, Reid Bond, Orion Cochrane and Matthews each leading the team on separate occasions. September 22, the men traveled to St. Joseph’s College to compete in a six-team event. While Husson ended up running away with the tournament victory by an overwhelming 30 strokes, Farmington was still able to hold off the University of New England for the second place finish. The Beavers captured their second place finish by a single stroke over UNE. Bond and Orion Cochrane each shot an 84 to lead the Beavers while Waltz and Woodbrey each shot an 86.
